My approach to jewelry

There are two approaches I use when it comes to jewelry: silver and colored
Approach 1: silver jewelry
The silver can count as your "bright" in the dark/light/bright recipe
It offers nice contrast from medium and dark value colors that sultry and burnished Winters tend to wear
It's a great neutral when you already have a 3-color combo made with your outfit
Approach 2: colored jewelry (and accessories)
The accessory color can complete a 3-color combo when only two colors come from your clothes and shoes
It is a great way to incorporate lower rated colors (25% or 50%, one star)
When wearing an out-of-season top, colored jewelry (especially in a wow color!) is a great way to improve your overall appearance and neutralize/combat the "wrong color" top
My personal approach to jewelry and accessories:
I typically wear my best colors as tops, which means most of the time I'm not looking to add those colors near my face (in earrings, a headband, etc.). Instead, I tend to wear my lowest rated colors as accessories because:
a) I am wearing a small amount of the colors (less impact on my appearance)
b) my better colors in the rest of my outfit will help balance them
Now, I do think having a few accessories in your wow colors is helpful, here's why: we've all been in a situation where we have to wear a color outside of our season (work function, sports team, uniform, etc.) or the item we want to wear isn't available in one of our best colors. We can help make this look better by adding accessories and lipstick in Winter colors.
So, for me, I would say about 75% of my colored accessories are my lowest rated colors and 25% are my best colors (or pieces I just really love).
This gives me a nice balance to mix in the right pieces depending on my outfit!
I also use accessories to complete the dark/light/bright recipe and to complete color combinations. Rarely will my accessories be the same color as my top or pants.
